Buy Nothing Day 2010
It might seem odd to some. We starting a digital publication around Luxury and Lifestyle, and yet amongst the first pieces we cover turns out to be around a concept of “Buy Nothing”.
But actually, it is quite opportune to mention this on Lursh.
First – a little history- “Buy Nothing Day” is a concept started in 1992- a peaceful day of protest against over-consumption and consumerism. It was started by social activists in Vancouver, and has grown since then. The growth of connectivity, information dissemination and content distribution has abetted the concept as it grows beyond Canada, US and UK.
What exactly is it? “The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from shopping and anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!” explains the Buy Nothing Day’s UK website.
There is some truth in that- not buying something just defers the purchase to another day- but just that thought- that little inconvenience has a long lasting psychological impact. Even if one does not observe this day, or disapprove of it as a propaganda, just the debate around this concept is sure to raise consciousness around relentless consumerism and excessive consumption.
As consumers we need to question the products we buy and challenge the companies who produce them. What are the true risks to the environment?
At Lursh, we believe that a lush lifestyle can be without negative impact on the environment. Why, if the right approach is taken, the planet might even be healthier. This is the Lursh lifestyle.
Lursh is about taking a different approach at lifestyle. Fine living can be sustainable. Luxury can be guilt free. Lifestyle can be Lursh. Nature inclined people are the Lursh People.
Welcome to Lursh- and wishing you a lush, abundant life.
